Validity: Gray (1846) described two different species on the same page, using the same name. One was based on skull "No. 1" and the other on skull "No. 2". He later (1850) corrected the error, describing D. clymene and saying that it was based on D. metis skull "No. 2," not "No. 1." The two original D. metis species are not nomina dubia, because they were based on skulls of known identity (No. 2= S. clymene and No. 1 = Tursiops truncatus). The two nominal species are commonly referred to as D. metis (Gray, 1846) No. 1 and D. metis (Gray, 1846) No. 2. [details]
