The specific epithet hirsuta is a Latin adjective meaning 'hairy' or 'bristly', and refers presumably to the presence of long notochaetae standing at all sorts of angles from the body axis: "Behind somite forty the appearance [of the body] is more irregular. This effect is in part produced by the tufts of long white notopodial setae, which first appear at about somite forty-five and (in preserved material) stand at all sorts of angles with the body axis" (Treadwell, 1928: 478).  [details]
