Editor's comment: Traditionally synonymised with Protula tubularia. However, Gmelin refers to earlier figures by Rumphius (who worked in Ambon, Indonesia) and Martini (mainly Mediterranean); the taxon most probably is confused. Mörch's discussion is very noteworthy! According to him "Serpula protensa Gmelin" is not a Serpula, but a Teredo or Kuphus. Protula protensa sensu Philippi most probably is the same as P. tubularia (see Mörch 1863: 359).
