Description Claparède (1870: plate 14, fig 4) gives a clear figure of the operculum. It looks like a Hydroides norvegica operculum rather than that of H. elegans. [details]

Synonymy Eupomatus trypanon cannot be a synonym of H. elegans as it is a senior name. Zibrowius (1971:721) preferred to match Eupomatus trypanon to Hydroides norvegica rather than H. elegans, based on the ecology of the occurrence. He wrote: "Les signalisations de "Hydroides norvegica" en Méditerranée sont très nombreuses, mais la plupart d'entre elles se référent clairement à l'espèce des salissures portuaires, c'est à dire, à H. elegans (Haswell). Après l'élimination de celles-ci, surtout quelques signalisations pour les étages circalittoral en bathyal sont à retenir qui, incontestablement, se rapportent au vrai H. norvegica retrouvé par nous-mêmes dans des biotopes semblables. Claparède (1870 : Eupomatus trypanon, région de Naples), et Marenzeller (1893; Corfou) l'ont trouvé sur des radioles de Cidaridae."  [details]
