Nomenclature The first appearance of this name seems to be in Savigny's 1822 annelid volumes of Description de l'Égypte (p.77). Savigny has a subdivision of Sabella called "Tribu. Sabellae Astartae" in which the first species is Sabella indica, with included synonym "Sabella grandis. Cuv. Collect. du Mus." apparently indicating a museum specimen labelled by Cuvier as S. grandis as the basis for Sabella indica. Then Cuvier (1930: vol 3 p192) in the second edition of Le règne animal, includes the name Sabella grandis in a footnote as "Ce sont les Sabellae Astartae, Sav,, telles que Sabella grandis, Cuv., ou Indica Sav. The footnote is for the sentence "Quelquefois les filets sont sur deux rangs à chaque". Thus Cuvier is characterising a group within Sabella (repeating the structure of Savigny), but it is doubtful if this constitutes a valid usage of Sabella grandis as distinct (it is not distinct from 'indica' here), and Sabella indica itself is confused and a homonym). Later editions of Le règne animal repeat the same information without adding further to it. The first edition of Cuvier in 1817 does not mention Sabella grandis. Later Quatrefages includes Sabella grandis Cuvier of R. An. p 192 [this is Le règne animal edition of 1830] in the synonymy of Sabella indica Savigny. The Hartman catalogue gave this occurrence in synonymy a incorrect listing as Sabella grandis Cuvier, 1817 in Quatrefages 1965 p.432. This was her shorthand for indicating a name not seen in the original work but mentioned in a later work. However, the name does not appear in Cuvier until the 1830 second edition of Cuvier (& the pagination Quatrefages gives of p.432 matches that work, and he doesn't give a date at all). [details]

Authority Usually given as a Cuvier name, but the name was first published by Savigny (1822) as an invalid name in synonymy to his new species, Sabella indica, apparently as objective synonyms, with S. indica replacing a museum label name of S. grandis.  [details]
