Taxonomy Heterobranchus speciosus Wagner, 1885 is indeterminable. The brief description (in translation "gills are divided clearly into two bundles. One sits at the head, the other is attached to the back to the front part of the body") saves it from being a nomen nudum. Nevertheless both Hartman catalogue and Day (1964:116) assign the genus to Sabellides and Hartman the species to S. octocirrata. Clearly they are relying on a previous source for the subjective synonymy, but it is not obvious what source (not Hessle, 1917). [details]
