Taxonomy Until recently, following Hartman, the only recognised species of Pomatostegus was stellatus, occurring circumtropical. Ten Hove & Kupriyanova distinguish 3 species with a more restricted distribution. The name stellatus should be reserved for tropical Atlantic records, material from all other regions should be attributed to either actinoceras or kroeyeri. [details]

Editor's comment Morch distinguished three subspecies (varieties) tetrapoma, fruticosa and pentapoma on the basis of the number of opercular discs; however, this is a function of age and of wear. [details]
