Distribution: the records from tropical Africa still need to be confirmed [details]
Editor's comment: Morch distinguished three subspecies (varieties) tetrapoma, fruticosa and pentapoma on the basis of the number of opercular discs; however, this is a function of age and of wear. [details]
Habitat: Known from seamounts and knolls [details]
Taxonomic Remark: Until recently, following Hartman, the only recognised species of Pomatostegus was stellatus, occurring circumtropical. Ten Hove & Kupriyanova distinguish 3 species with a more restricted distribution. The name stellatus should be reserved for tropical Atlantic records, material from all other regions should be attributed to either actinoceras or kroeyeri. [details]
