Taxonomy According to Licher (1999: 307) the species is not a syllid, being the holotype an epitoke form with hypertrophied eyes which taxonomy is unclear. In the original description Chamberlin (1919: 176) already states that "The generic position of the form is very doubtful since the character of any armature in the pharynx, if present, was not successfully elucidated in the single type-specimen and because comparatively so few of the pelagic or sexual forms in the family have been described. The presence of tentacular cirri makes the position of the species in Syllis more doubtful, as the known sexual forms in that genus generally lack these processes.[details]

Etymology The specific epithet remex is the Latin noun for 'oarsman'or 'rower', and refers to the "broad, thin, natatory dorsal setae which are unlike any I have found described for other species" (Chamberlin, 1919: 176).  [details]

Habitat The only known specimen was collected at the surface, at night by electric night. It was an epitokous specimen, and the atokous form and its habitat are unknown. [details]
