Synonymy Blake (1996:192) writes "there can be no doubt that P. carunculata is the same as D. socialis". Radashevsky (1993) was aware of the similarity but thought that P. carunculata was distinct because it is a shell borer and has a pygidium with one dorsal incision, whereas P. socialis and P. cardalia construct tubes in sediment and have a three-lobed pygidium. Manchenko & Radashevsky (2002) used P. carunculata as valid as recombined as Dipolydora carunculata (the genus was created by Blake in 1996). They wrote that Blake's synonymization "seems superficial since wide morphological variation of a 'widespread' D. socialis has not been examined in relation to ecology and distribution but merely reported as fact" [details]Type locality Vostok Bay, Sea of Japan, no geolocation given, estimated (gazeteer) as 42.876 N 132.743 E, 8 m.
