Distribution Atlantic coast of the USA: from North Carolina (Beaufort) to Florida. Bahamas. Gulf of Mexico (Florida, Mississippi). Caribbean Sea (Aruba; Belize, Bonaire, Grand Cayman; Mexico). Atlantic coast of Hispaniola.  [details]

Etymology The specific epithet borealis, Latin adjective meaning 'northern', refers to the more northerly distribution of the species in the Americas when compared to the similar Namalycastis abiuma sp. group.  [details]

Habitat Found intertidally from muddy sand and shell fragments. The species is commonly found associated with decaying vegetation in brackish coastal areas of variable salinity. According to Glasby (1999) in the northern range of its distribution the species has been found under the bark of dead pine trees, under seaweed drift with earthworms, and under a log in the Spartina zone, while in the south region of its range (Belize) it was found in the mangrove zone associated with rotting mangrove tree branches together with Namanereis amboinensis.  [details]
