The specific epithet hymenobranchiata is composed by the prefix of Greek origin hymeno-, meaning 'membrane', and the Latin adjective branchiata, meaning 'having gills or branchiae', and refers presumably to the expansion of the notopodial lobes as leaf-like extensions, fused dorsally with the branchiae to form membranous wings: "The fusion of branchiae and notopodial lobes in C. hymenobranchiata are unique for this genus" (Blake & Kudenov, 1978: 245).
