Duchassaing & Michelotti 1860 assigned Gorgonia exserta Ellis & Solander to their new genus Thesea as Thesea exerta. In 1864 they recognized this error and corrected Gorgonia exserta to Swiftia exserta. They described T. guadalupensis as a replacement for the erroneous T. exerta.
