Plumage: above brown with two dark bands surrounding lighter band on rump and blue iridescent wing-spots; crown grey; below pinkish grey fading to white on throat and belly. Immature browner than adult with buff edges on feathers of back giving barred appearance. Bare parts: iris brown; eyering red bill yellow with red base, brown in immature; feet and legs purple-red.
