Lyngbya penicilliformis is proposed as a substitute name for L. Penicillata (Gomont) Hoffmann, a
later homonym ofL. Penicillata (Kützing) Rabenhorst (1865: 146), based on Leibleinia penicillata Kützing(1847a: 194; type locality: Falaise, Calvados, France). Even when Gomont's monograph is used as a later starting point for the nomenclature of the Oscillatoriales, the Hoffmann combination is predated by Lyngbya penicillata (Kützing) Rabenhorst ex Forti (1907: 291). Drouet (1968: 204, 212), after examining the holotype of Phormidium penicillatum (in PC), assigned it to Oscillatoria submembranacea (Ardissone &Strafforello) Drouet. [details]
