Description: Size: small, less than 1 m tall. Plumage: deep pink, crimson and black. Other details: deep-keeled bill with upper mandible triangular in section, fits closely into lower; inner surface of both mandibles covered with fine mat of laminae. [details]
Remark: While some authors have tended to merge Phoeniconaias with Phoenicopterus, there appears to be sufficient difference in behaviour and feeding mechanisms to warrant generic distinction. [details]
