Synonymy Although Spongia (Spongia) pertusa sensu Hyatt, 1877 is a junior primary homonym of Spongia pertusa Esper, 1794 (= Hyattella pertusa), the varieties of Spongia officinalis tubulifera erected by Hyatt which were considered junior synonyms of Hyatt's pertusa by Van Soest (1978) are not automatically also synonyms of the replacement species Spongia (Spongia) anclotea. Further research is necessary to determine whether one of these varieties have priority of replacement of Spongia (Spongia) pertusa[details]
