Checked: verified by a taxonomic editorStatus Calvo et al. (2009) demonstrated that so-called Dendropoma petraeum (Monterosato, 1884) forms a species complex in the Mediterranean. Templado et al. (2016) assigned the names D. lebeche Templado, Richter & Calvo, 2016 and D. anguliferum (Monterosato, 1878) to two species of this complex, and recognized a third as still unnamed. For the fourth, D. petraeum sensu stricto they accepted a senior synonym, D. cristatum (Biondi, 1859), as had been proposed previously by Scuderi (1995). Dendropoma petraeum is included in Annex II (Endangered or Threatened Species) of the Protocol for Specially Protected Areas and Biodiversity in the Mediterranean (Barcelona Convention), and its reefs have been listed as threatened biostructures in the Mediterranean Red Data Book. Templado et al. (2016: 27) accordingly suggested including all four species of the "petraeum" complex under the protection of Annex II, a step that still needs to be formally initialized. [details]
