Checked: verified by a taxonomic editorTaxonomy This is a junior homonym of Spongia tubulosa Linnaeus, 1759, which is incertae sedis. Linnaeus (1759) gave no indication from where his material originated. In 1767, he gave Oceano Indico as type locality, but since he did not refer to his 1759 citation the conspecificity is uncertain. In 1767 he suggests Spongia tubulosa is the same as Pallas'(1767) Spongia fastigiata (whereas Pallas himself erected an apparently different Spongia tubulosa from 'Mare Americanum, a junior homonym, which is permanently unavailable according to art. 57.2). Linnaeus (1767: tubulosa) and Pallas (1766: fastigiata) refer to Seba's (1743-1765), pl. 97 fig. 2, which is clearly not a sponge and probably is a Zoanthus (Cnidaria).  [details]
