| Notes | |
This species is vaguely described as similar to Spongia dichotoma sensu Linnaeus and Pallas. Apparently the plates (Pl. IV and Pl. X) have been swapped and in the copy available from the Biodiversity Heritage Library there are pencil corrections in both plates, that do not leave a clear indication which of the plates refers to Spongia fruticosa. We have to assume this to be incertae sedis. There is an Indian Ocean species Endectyon fruticosum (Dendy, 1887) which may have been conspecific, but proof of this is lacking.
Spongia fruticosa Montagu, 1818 (a junior homonym, not to be confused with Esper's species) is assigned to Desmacidon fruticosum. [details]
Type locality: Indian Ocean ('Ostindische Producten') [details]
