Taxonomy Carter (1880) recorded this species as Reniera fibulifera Sdt and added that this sponge '..seems to be world-wide in its distribution,...'. There is no Reniera fibulifera authored by Schmidt. Possibly, Carter made a mistake and meant Reniera fibulata Schmidt, 1862. Thus, the combination Reniera fibulifera must be assigned to Carter, 1880.
The description refers to a 'small growth, about 1-16th of an inch' which was not kept as specimen or slide. The species is incertae sedis. [details]
