Taxonomy Ehlers (1870) erected Trikentrion for Spongia muricata sensu Esper (1794). It is here assumed that this conforms to Pallas' Spongia muricata. Type specimens for both records are probably lost.
This is not Spongia muricata Linnaeus, 1759, which is unrecognizable. According to Linnaeus (1767) it originated from the Indian Ocean ('Oceano Aethiopico'). [details]
