Vosmaer (1935) lumped large numbers of unrelated species under the name Microciona prolifera. This is untenable and best ignored. [details] For a comprehensive synonymy and further references concerning this species see Hooper, 1996a: 175-176. [details] Originally described from New Jersey, NW Atlantic, and subsequently reported from the whole Eastern Seaboard of the USA and south to Florida, Mexico and Brazil.
