Notes  Vosmaer (1935) lumped large numbers of unrelated species under the name Microciona prolifera. This is untenable and best ignored. [details]

For a comprehensive synonymy and further references concerning this species see Hooper, 1996a: 175-176. [details]

Originally described from New Jersey, NW Atlantic, and subsequently reported from the whole Eastern Seaboard of the USA and south to Florida, Mexico and Brazil. The tropical records of this species need to be re-examined and are expected to belong to a different species. [details]
