Holotype Gray (1867) erected this species with unrecognizable description, based on figures of spicules and skeleton of an unknown sponge in Bowerbank (1964: figs. 73-76, 292). Carter (1871c) found this material in the collections of the British Museum and gave a recognizable description.  [details]
