Notes  Harmful effect: Production of DTX-1 demonstrated for Japanese populations. North American strains apparently non-toxic. [details]

Additional information: Cosmopolitan species, widely distributed in cold and warm waters.

Toxicity
Dinophysis rotundata has been associated with toxicity only in one case, in the Black Sea (Vershnin & Kamnev 2001). However, since D. caudata was also present in the same sample, the species responsible for DSP cannot be ascertained.
