Checked: verified by a taxonomic editorEtymology Lagis is a feminine Greek given name. In Nordiska Hafs-Annulater Malmgren multiple times uses ancient Greek female names for new genera. In this case Lagis appears as the name of a courtesan in the work "The Deipnosophists of Athenaeus", while Lagisca (Polynoidae) as the name of a mistress appears in the preceeding sentence. [details]

Checked: verified by a taxonomic editorGrammatical gender feminine from an ancient Greek given name, Lagis. Malmgren's species name for the type species appears to be a genitive of a surname so is not helpful for deciding gender. Recent workers have added two new species with suffixes that look masculine. Lagis crenulatus should be crenulata for gender agreement, but Lagis plurihamus can be treated as an unchanging noun in apposition. [details]
