Numerous short filaments at the tip of the dorsal spines. Soft rays in anal fin 5-7. Thickened and elongate lower pectoral rays. Scales ctenoid or cycloid. Vertebrae 26-28. About 55 cm maximum length. Usually small and very colorful. Inhabits rocks and corals. All are carnivores of small benthic crustaceans and fishes.
