Classification: Some authors consider T. communis as a subspecies of the fossil T. tricarinata (Brocchi, 1814). The majority of authors who consider both forms as separate species are followed. [details]
Distribution: Rare of absent from east Channel and southern North Sea [details]
Nomenclature: Referred to by Linnaeus (1761; Fn Svec.; p. 525; n. 2171) as Turbo terebra (of Linnaeus, 1758 by reference to Syst. Nat. 10th Ed.) with locality "mari occidentali" which here refers to the North Sea west of Sweden. [details]
Additional information: Hammer (1775:211) used the name Turbo terebra for the European species occuring near Norway, today commonly referred to as Turritella communis Risso, 1826, and using reference to Fauna Svecica of Linné, 1761. [details]
Additional information: Pennant (1777:113 and 1812:308) used the name Turbo terebra in the sense of the European species today commonly referred to as Turritella communis Risso, 1826. [details]
