Notes  Authority: Linnaeus, 1758 has descibed Cardium corallinumas well as Cardium stultorum , the first hails from the mediterranean, the second from West-Europe.
According to Lucas (1974a), Poutiers (1978), McKay & Smith (1979) and Van Aartsen et al. (1984) these two species are synonyms. When two synonyms are published simultanious than is "the relative priority determined by the action of the first reviser " according to ICZN art. 24.2. But in this case it is not easy to determine who is the first reviser. This and the discussion of Dodge (1952) in mind the species name Mactra corallina should be better. This name is first mentionned in Linnaeus' Systema Naturae, but ICZN does not recognize page priority. [details]

Authority: Montagu treated in 1803 only M. stultorum and in 1808 he described a species M. cinerea that had a lot of resemblance with the first. Nowadays M. cinerea is treated as a subspecies of M. corallina according to Janssen et al. (1984). [details]

Nomenclature: If Mactra stultorum (Linnaeus, 1758) and Mactra corallina (Linnaeus, 1758), simultaneously described in the Systema Naturae, are considered synonyms, the name to be used as valid is determined under ICZN article 24.1, by the action of the first author citing in a published work those names or acts and selecting from them (the "First Reviser"). The earliest such action that could be traced is that of Philippi (1844: p. 10) who uses Mactra stultorum as valid and writes (in translation) "the shell varies to completely white, which is M. corallina L.". The option taken by Bucquoy, Dautzenberg & Dollfus (1896, their statement on p. 556) of choosing M. corallina is not supported, as the ICZN does not consider page priority.  [details]

Synonymy: Synonymised with Mactra corallina (Linnaeus, 1758) [details]
