Taxonomy Although the name Microcionina was first used by Carter, 1875, authorship of this suborder goes to Hajdu et al. 1994 because the current composition of the group has been substantially changed from Carter's concept, which covers what is now considered the family Microcionidae (see there). Names of taxa of the order level do not fall under the strict rules of priority of the ICZN. [details]

Diagnosis Poecilosclerida with terminally spined ectosomal monactinal megascleres (occasionally modified to quasidiactinal forms); choanosomal megascleres diverse, consisting of at least two categories localized to distinct regions within the skeleton, or sometimes up to five categories including spicules echinating fibres in many taxa; isochelae of palmate origin, with diverse forms of toxas but lacking sigmas. [details]
