Nomenclature There are several issues concerning date of publication, spelling, validity of Cirrhineris.

Cirrhineris [Blainville (1828) original spelling] soon had multiple confused subsequent spellings by other authors, including Cirrhinereis, Cirrineris, Cirrinereis. However, Quatrefages (1866:462) was one 19th century author who maintained the original Cirrhineris spelling. Blainville (1818) earlier used Cirronereis for a nereidid genus, no cirratulids are mentioned. Agassiz (1846 Nomenclatoris Zoologici Index Universalis) uses forms Cirrinereis, Cirrhinereis and Cirronereis.

Hartman Catalogue (1959:407) uses Cirrhinereis [sic, adding an 'e'] and wrongly indicates Blainville (1818) for the genus date (there actually a nereidid name, and not the same spelling). Her inclusion of Audouin & Milne-Edwards (1833) in authorship of the genus also seems unwarranted as they correctly cite Blainville (1828). Use of the genus name, Cirrhineris, in Blainville (1828) in conjunction with the species, C. filigera, Les., may make the name available from 1828, but most included taxa are either indeterminable or have been placed elsewhere. [details]
