Description: Usually insular and not continental (Ref. 7300). Inhabits shallow coral reefs and rocky bottoms, primarily around islands. Common in both lagoon and seaward reef habitats. Juveniles are pelagic (Ref. 9335). Feeds mainly on small fishes (especially postlarvae), larger crustaceans and molluscs of the plankton. Solitary and nocturnal in habit (Ref. 5213). Generally in caves by day. Known to produce sound.
