Synonymy A few generic level changes can be proposed from our analysis and are summarized in Table 4. Heptacyclus virgatus, the type and only species in the genus, grouped within the genus Malmiana, rendering Malmiana paraphyletic. The monotypic Heptacyclus has priority; therefore all species of Malmiana should be transferred to the genus Heptacyclus.* This synonymy has been proposed by Epshtein (1967), but was done so in a footnote without explanation, and has not been widely accepted. The synonymy was also suggested by Sawyer (1986), who stated that Heptacyclus is ‘inadequately distinguished from Malmiana.’ It was again suggested in the recent description of a new species of Malmiana (Burreson & Kalman 2006) where the only difference stated between the genera is the overall larger size of Heptacyclus virgatus compared with species of Malmiana. [details]
