Taxonomy Esper assumed his specimen (depicted in pl. VIII) was the same species as Pallas' (1766) Spongia fibrillosa. However, Ehlers (1870) re-examined Esper's specimen and reassigned it to Pachychalina. Since the specimen subsequently disappeared, we cannot be certain of the synonymy and we have to assign both Pallas' and Esper's names as species inquirenda. [details]
