Laothoe Sars, 1893 was proposed as a nom. nov. for Laothoes Boeck, 1871. Boeck (1876) wrote “The name Laothoes was used by Fabricius in 1808 for a lepidopteran and should therefore be changed for another.” Based on this statement Sars (1893) took action – “As the term Laothoes, according to Boeck, has been long ago appropriated in Zoology, I …… substitute the feminine form of the same name.” Unfortunately, Boeck was in error – the name that Fabricius had used for a hawk-moth was Laothoe, so Boeck’s name stands and Sars’ name falls.
