Synonymy Licher (2000), in a monumental and painstaking monograph on genus Typosyllis, maintained the genus named by Langerhans as valid for Syllis-like species with only long-bladed compound falcigers. New species in the genus Typosyllis have been described since (Typosyllis antoni Aguado, Helm, Weidhase & Bleidorn, 2015; Typosyllis papillosus Tovar-Hernández, Granados-Barba & Solís-Weiss, 2002; Typosyllis pseudoheterosetosa Böggemann & Westheide, 2004 accepted as Megasyllis pseudoheterosetosa (Böggemann & Westheide, 2004)). Typosyllis antoni continues to be used by one group (Ponz-Segrelles et al 2018). However, there is evidence that Typosyllis defined on the character of falcigers is not soundly based. Álvarez-Campos et al (2015) wrote: "the genus Typosyllis does not have any systematic validity, since the species that would compose this group (Licher 1999) did not appear in a monophyletic clade in our analysis, and in contrast, they appeared scattered all over the tree, similar to that found in previous studies (Aguado et al. 2007, 2012, 2015b). Furthermore, the 18 species-complex groups proposed by Licher (1999) did not agree with the results obtained in our molecular phylogeny or in previous analyses (Aguado et al. 2007, 2012, 2015b)."
