Description Colour in life: disc uniformly deep slate grey, brown or mottled, arms cream with transverse red markings fringed with black, ventral arms surface and borders of gental slits cream with dorsal red markings sometimes extending to tentacle pore (Humphreys, 1981). Arm length to 18 cm, disc diameter to 22 mm. Disc naked, skin-covered, no granules or spines. Disc with red centre, pale periphery; arm spines patterned. Habitat: among and under rubble and coral.
Also distributed in Saipan, Fiji (Clark, 1954); Ceylon, Bay of Bengal, East Indies, north Australia, Philippine, China, south Japan and South Pacific Is. (Clark & Rowe, 1971); Australia (Rowe & Gates, 1995); India (Sastry, 1996).
Ecology: benthic, inshore (Rowe & Gates, 1995).
General distribution: WIO, Red Sea to W Pacific (Richmond, 1998); tropical, Indo-west-central Pacific Ocean, depth range 0-36 m. (Rowe & Gates, 1995). [details]
