This species is known to produce the dermatotoxin lyngbyatoxin and to be the cause of "Swimmer's itch" when in direct contact with human skin. Aplysiatoxin & debromoaplysiatoxin according to Fujiki et al. 1985 (Japan); Lyngbyatoxin A according to Cardellina et al. 1979 and Aimi et al. 1990 (USA); Lyngbyatoxin‐A & debromoaplysiatoxin according to Osborne et al. 2001 (Australia) and Lyngbyatoxins A,B,C according to Aim et al. 1990 (USA).
