The morphology of sea urchin Pourtalesia jeffreysi is studied in 20 samples from several Arctic regions. The results of biometrical analysis indicate high variability. The morphological differences between bathyal (225-1270 m) and abyssal (2800-3081 m) populations are stable and sufficient to establish two new subspecies, P. j. gibbosa and P. j. lata. Both subspecies are widely distributed in the Arctic and well distinguishable from the holotype of P. jeffreysi Thomson, 1873. The abyssal P. j. lata has three main types of the shape of tests. The conclusion made by David (1983) is confirmed: the ratio of morphological types differ significantly in separated abyssal populations.
