Etymology Derivation of Thelepus. Leuckart states "Von [thele (Greek)], Warze [nipple], und [pous (Greek)] Fuss [foot]." Foot in Greek is pous podos, masculine. Nipple in Greek is thele, feminine. The combined word takes gender masculine of the 2nd word, and the stem for a higher level category is thus 'Thelepod' rather than 'Thelep' as pointed out by Holthe (1976).

Type designation According to article 68.2.1 of the ICZN (1999), "The expressions "gen. n., sp. n.", "new genus and species", or an equivalent, applied before 1931 to only one of two or more new nominal species originally included in a new nominal genus or subgenus, are deemed to be an original designation if no other type species was explicitly designated." Leuckart (1849: 169) introduces the new generic name as follows: "Thelepus Bergmanni nov. gen. et nov. sp." This way, the type species of the genus Thelepus Leuckart, 1849 is Thelepus bergmanni Leuckart, 1849, by original designation, instead of Thelepus cincinnatus (Fabricius, 1780), as it has been normally considered (e.g.: Hartman 1959, Day 1967, Fauchald 1977, Holthe 1986, Hutchings & Glasby 1987, Hutchings et al. 2015, Hsueh & Li 2017).
